The Grandmaster is the perfect title for the new film by Wong Kar-Wai, the director of such masterpieces as Happy Together and Chungking Express, and the grandmaster himself of cinema.

The action picture chronicles the life of martial arts master Ip Man; starting in the 1930’s in Foshan, China to his flight to Hong Kong after the Second Sino-Japanese War, and the events leading to his death.

While karate films aren’t usually my favorite genre, it is the director’s artful and cinematic display and humanizing romantic plotlines that keep me enthralled.
