Patti's Picks - A Natural Way to Ageless Beauty

Designer Maria Cornejo

Monday, December 2, 2013 7:00:25 AM America/New_York

Fashion designer Maria Cornejo has been my go-to for some time; her work has an international quality that manages to be both trendy and timeless.

It’s no surprise that her inspiration is globally influenced  – she has Chilean roots, a Parisian education and a New York lifestyle (she lives with her family in Brooklyn). Perhaps her time spent globetrotting is the reason her clothes travel so well. I too am always on the go, and it’s convenient to have a wardrobe that looks just as great wrinkled as it does freshly ironed!

Don’t be surprised if you spot me downtown at Maria’s SoHo boutique. If you can’t visit the store yourself, check out Restorsea’s interview with Maria last Spring to learn more.

Fashion Week September 2013: Best Wishes to Our Designer Friends

Fashion WeekIt’s that time of year again! Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week begins September 5th at Lincoln Center, and here at Restorsea, we’re excited to show our support for our dear friends Mara Hoffman, Erin Fetherston and Maria Cornejo as they debut their S/S 2014 lines on the runway.

Mara HoffmanWhether it’s her eclectic prints, resort wear drapery, or itty bitty bikinis, Mara Hoffman certainly knows how to make a woman feel and look empowered. This past July, Mara revealed her Resort/Swim 2014 collection inspired by India, using bold patterns and colors to celebrate life. While Mara hasn’t clued us in on the theme behind her S/S 2014 collection, she has shared her personal style icons with us: “Frida Kahlo and Cher in the 1970's,” says Mara. “They are icons that were fearless in their lives, and it’s clearly reflected in their style.” Read our full interview with Mara here.

Erin FetherstonKnown for her whimsical and feminine fashion lines, Erin Fetherston shared her inspiration for her S/S 2014 collection stating, “I was inspired by my love of gardens. You can expect lots of floral inspired prints and textures, and rose garden colors with shades of wildflower inspired accents.” Erin is also collaborating with Cosabella on a collection of bridal intimates for Spring 2014. Stay tuned for our exclusive interview with Erin Fetherston coming out on our blog Wednesday, September 4!

Zero + Maria CornejoMaria Cornejo, who owns Zero + Maria Cornejo, an effortless, feminine, and tailored clothing label, also has big plans in store for her runway collection, but has kept the details under wraps. “It’s a special year for us,” says Maria. “I’ll leave it at that.” We trust that Maria will have a fantastic line, as we were blown out of the water by her previous designs for Michelle Obama. Read our full interview with Maria here.

Make sure you check out our fabulous friends’ collections this week. Best of luck ladies, we’re excited to see what you have in store!

There is a powerful sense of complexity in the minimal, and that is exactly what downtown fashion designer Maria Cornejo’s work is all about. Her clothing label, Zero + Maria Cornejo, is high on our lists of favorites—because of its effortless feminine styling and refined tailoring—so you can understand how giddy we felt when we heard Maria wanted to speak to us for our blog!

Restorsea: Your background is very international (born in South America, growing up in Europe and now living in NY), how has this affected your design’s point of view?

Maria Cornejo: I always say I design for each part of my life; the colorful pieces for for my Latin side, the blacks are for my New York side and the more sophisticated pieces are for my Parisian side.

R: Speaking of your design, tell us about your experience dressing Michelle Obama!

M: She’s an extraordinary woman and I was just thrilled to have the opportunity to dress her. It was great to get a name check from her in Vogue.

R: And what can we expect in your upcoming s/s ‘14 collection?

M: It’s a special year for us. I’ll leave it at that.

R: Every day on our blog Patti gives out her Patti’s Picks, what are some of Maria’s Picks right now?

M: My Suni boots! They are the perfect in-between weather shoe; I received a Clarisonic brush this winter and its been my go-to beauty product of late; I walk across the Brooklyn Bridge in the morning on my way to work (it helps clear my head during the design process); I just saw the Nada exhibit for Frieze which was great and I like to ride my bike on the weekend, especially along the Brooklyn Promenade.

R: Fans of your label would be surprised to find out that…?

M: I’m funny! Sometimes I look very serious in pictures but most people would describe me as lighthearted.

Merci Maria! Mark us down for a shopping and joke-telling appointment soon!
