Sleep Deprivation and Aging

Wednesday, October 23, 2013 10:00:31 AM America/New_York

Research studies have discovered that poor sleep habits can accelerate the signs of aging on skin by weakening the ability of our skin to repair itself at night. Pump the brakes on aging by following these simple tips to form better sleeping habits!

Consistency is key! Try to develop a sleep schedule where you go to bed and wake up the same time every night. It might be harder to stick to during the weekends, but at least during the weekdays you can train your body to become accustomed to a set schedule. It will help you feel much more alert when you wake up in the morning and have a better rest at night.

Yoga at Night. Yoga isn’t just for early risers! Try devoting half an hour before bed to yoga or basic stretching. Studies show that relaxing exercises such as these can help improve your sleep.

Stay away from caffeine! Research shows that caffeine can have effects on your sleep up to 10 hours after drinking it. If you’re looking to have a cup of tea or another beverage before bed, make sure to keep it decaf.

Recover lost hours over the weekend. Our schedules during the week are usually packed and sometimes getting a full 8 hours just seems like a luxury. If that’s the case, prioritize sleep on the weekends and catch up on all the lost hours from the week.

Following these simple suggestions will help take care of your face, body and mind.

4 Homemade Skincare Remedies to Avoid

Wednesday, July 3, 2013 10:00:24 AM America/New_York

We love DIY projects… But when it comes to skincare, be careful when trying homemade masks and treatments. Steer clear of these 4 popular homemade skincare suggestions – they’ll end up doing more harm than good.

1. Toothpaste on acne. Toothpaste is meant for teeth, not skin. Instead of clearing up your acne, the caustic ingredients in toothpaste will cause irritation, peeling and redness.

2. Egg white masks. Raw eggs contain a plethora of bacteria (E. Coli and salmonella, anyone?). There’s a reason they aren’t meant to be eaten raw! Animal protein also clogs pores – a double no-no. Think twice before slathering this on your face.

3. Tea tree oil. This popular essential oil has been recommended for almost every skin care ailment, from blemishes to dandruff. However, pure tea tree oil is very aggressive and can dry your skin out, cause irritation and rashes and even disrupt hormone function. When you purchase tea tree oil yourself, you also never know if you are getting low quality, unpurified, unstable or synthetic product.

4. Citrus fruits. Citrus fruits are irritating when applied topically to skin, especially on lips. Lemons are the most harmful as they have a chemical that increases sensitivity to light – causing potential blisters, sunburn and increased sun damage.
