Sleeping with your makeup on will age your skin. I have spoken with numerous women who sleep with their makeup on because they “want to look pretty when they wake up in the morning.”

Clean skin equals “waking up pretty in the morning” because:

1. Taking off your makeup will reduce the chance of breakouts. This is because cleansing your skin will remove dirt, makeup and dead skin thereby helping to keep the follicle clean and open. The trick is using a sulfate-free cleanser that will clean your skin without stripping your skin of its essential oils. I use the Reviving Cleanser.

2. Removing dirt and makeup trapped in the skin will make your skin look younger. In 2013, the Daily Mail conducted an experiment in which one woman stopped washing her face for an entire month and simply reapplied her makeup over her unwashed skin each morning. The results: experts said she literally aged herself by 10 years — all because she skipped cleansing for 30 days.

3. You greatly reduce the chances of developing an infection or rash. According to Annie Chiu MD, “Makeup often contains irritants like dyes and perfumes that, when left on the skin for long periods of time, can cause inflammation.”

No matter how tired you are, please wash your face before going to bed. Your skin will thank you.
