Educating 100,000 Girls by 2025

Pulitzer Prize winner, Nicolas Kristof profiled TAY THI NGUYEN in his May 26th New York Times Sunday Review Op-Ed piece,”Graduate of the Year”: http://nyti.ms/1oYpppu

According to Kristof, “Three times Tay Thi has fainted while here at college, training to become an English teacher, because she starved herself to afford tuition. But she had the strength to persist and soon will become the first person in her village to graduate from college, and she embodies such grit and selflessness that, to me, she’s the world’s college graduate of the year.”

Staying in school was possible because of the help she received from Room to Read, an aid group that sponsored Tay Thi and covered her school fees, uniform, books, bicycle to get to school and other expenses.

Restorsea contributes 5% of its SALES to Room to Read’s Girls’ Education program, which supports thousands of girls with financial assistance, tutoring, mentoring and life skills training. Our vision is to help Room to Reach educate 100,000 girls by 2025.

I was raised to believe that education is a way to live a better life. This was my parents’ philosophy which they instilled (or drilled) in my brother and me. I lived a no-frills childhood but my parents cheerfully paid for my college and graduate schools. As a result, I was fortunate to graduate with zero debt which enabled me to pursue my career dream of working in the beauty business.

Education is like dropping a pebble into a pond and getting a ripple effect. Educated people make more money and are more likely to escape poverty. Educating girls is the most powerful and effective way to address global poverty. My belief in education and commitment to mentoring young women caused me to reach out to John Wood, the inspirational founder of Room to Read, a global organization that promotes literacy and gender equality. Your Restorsea purchases help us support Room to Read and fulfill our goal of promoting global literacy and girl power. If all children in low-income countries left school with basic reading skills, 171 million people could be lifted out of poverty (a Pao-werful thought).
