Why Hand Sanitizers May Make You Sick

Hand Sanitizers

I cringe every time I see someone squirt their hands with hand sanitizer. I am not a big fan of using hand sanitizers for the following reasons:

1. Most hand sanitizers use triclosan. Research has shown that triclosan can disrupt the endocrine system, amplifying testosterone. In animal studies, it reduced muscle strength. It may also harm the immune system. Whether these findings add up to human toxicity isn't established yet, but the FDA is currently reviewing the issue.

2. Also over time, bacteria when exposed to triclosan can become resistant to many types of antibiotics.

3. The main concern with triclosan, however, is that it doesn't protect against viruses or fungi. "Colds are caused by viruses, not bacteria," says Allison Aiello, associate professor of epidemiology at the University of Michigan.

The best way is to frequently wash your hands with soap and water. To see these effects, though, you have to wash for about 24 seconds and dry hands well as damp skin is breeding ground for germs.
