Despite what many beauty articles will tell you, your pores cannot “open and close”. Pores are channels in your skin that allow sebum, your skin’s natural oil, to surface. However, they do not have muscles to allow them to open and close.

This misconception might have developed since steam and hot water can loosen excess oil and debris from pores. Pores might also appear larger if they are clogged, stretching and making the pore more visible. Over time, aging and sun damage can also contribute to larger pores as the structure supporting your skin become weaker.
