Gel manicures are a godsend… right? Well, we love them. They’re gorgeous, flawless, and long lasting. Women simply do not have the time for traditional manicures anymore. The question is: do the pros outweigh the cons?
LA based celebrity manicurist Jenna Hipp questions the benefits of the process. She recognizes the beautiful and flawless results, but the damage done to the nail tissue from just one gel manicure and removal can take up to a year to heal. Another undesirable consequence of loving gel manicures stems from the use of the UV light to set the gel. Exposing your hands to frequent UV light is harmful to skin and may increase the rate at which your skin ages.
Luckily for us, nail companies are coming up with toxin-free, safer practices to get this desirable look. For instance, OPI has released an LED light alternative to original UV light. So for now, the jury’s out. The convenience and beauty of the gel manicure is undeniable, but we should wait patiently until a safer, healthier alternative is presented to us. Plus, who wants to keep the same nail color for three weeks? That’s like committing to one fabulous clutch for those late summer nights.
